KINGMAN - The Hualapai Mountain Medical Center will open for business at 9 a.m. today, officially making Kingman a two-hospital town.
The hospital passed its final inspection by the Arizona Department of Health Services last week. The inspection included overviews of all operations, including clinical and administrative services.
The hospital will have to see 30 patients before it can apply for a Medicare provider number, which the hospital needs before it can be reimbursed by the state for seeing Medicare patients and those covered by the Arizona Healthcare Cost Containment System.
It is unlikely that the hospital would be reimbursed for those patients if they received out-patient treatment, so the first 30 patients will most likely receive services through the emergency department, which it would be reimbursed for, said Robert Cathey with HMMC.
More than 170 employees have already been hired at the hospital, which includes nurses, administrative staff, housekeeping and other positions. The $70 million facility was finished two years after breaking ground on the project.
Unlike Kingman Regional Medical Center, which is a 235-bed non-profit hospital, HMMC is a for-profit hospital with 70 beds, all private rooms. HMMC is shelled for an additional 36 beds on the empty fourth floor should the center need to expand, officials said.
HMMC celebrated its opening with a reception for local leaders Friday night. The evening included a demonstration landing by Tri-state CareFlight out of Bullhead City, which will be responsible for the medical center's air ambulance services.
The Cerbat Garden Club has already submitted plans for a medication-healing garden to be located just off of the cafeteria on the west side of the hospital. The club is accepting donations and memorials to loved ones to help offset the costs. Those who would like to help with the project can call Sue at (928) 897-6542 or Sandie at (928) 897-1308.

I came from another state to KRMC. I was treated like an outcast. People who have been at the hospital for so long have forgotten how to play nice in the sandbox. I am now employed @HMMC. It is a breath of fresh air I will now stay and enjoy the beauty of this facility and all that it offers to the community.

NOT FOR PROFIT= No tax dollars being put back into the local community.
For Profit=HUGE tax dollars being put back into the community.
Many states have set forth on legislative efforts to remove Not for Profit status from hospitals because they are making huge profits while contributing NOTHING to the tax base of the community.

Rumor, (unverified information) is spread by ignorant people, as a means to make themselves appear smarter than they are.
HMMC is licensed as a general acute care hospital and under this type of license, agreed to admit and care for patients regardless of their insurance type or inability to pay.
It is true that HMMC does not have an obstetrics ward; and, does not have a pediatrics ward, but they do have very knowledgeable and caring physicians and nursing staff that will take wonderful care of your children in the Emergency Department. (The HMMC ER physicians are NOT from the same group as the KRMC ER physicians)
MedCath Corporation would not build a hospital in an area such as Kingman where more than 50% of the residents are covered under the MediCare program, and many of our younger residents are covered by state funded programs unless they planned to treat them -- if HMMC did not accept Medicare and State funded health care coverage, who would they treat, as there are not many companies in Kingman that provide private insurance to their employees, and for sure, there are not many residents who can pay cash for a hospital stay.
Incidentally, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona has several plans for Medicare covered patients ...BlueCross/ BlueShield also has subsidiaries that process Medicare claims for the Department of Health and Human Services; thus, those who are spreading rumors need to keep their mouths shut, and those that are questioning if the rumors are in fact the truth, which they obviously are not, should come visit the new facility, speak to the people from our community who were blessed and are now employees of HMMC; of which many of the employees are in the 50+ category and who were hired for their hands-on knowledge gained over years in the healthcare field. We know how we would like to be treated as a patient, and thus we will make it a point to treat our patients as we would like to be treated.
I challenge anyone reading this to take time to visit HMMC, meet the staff working there and oh yes, you are likely to see your personal physician there as many of the local physicians are on the medical staff and will be admitting and treating their patients at HMMC...
Looking forward to meeting you!
P.S., I have been a resident of Kingman for greater than 10 years and applied a number of times for a job at KRMC for which I was well qualified; only to be passed over by someone they hired from another state; unlike HMMC who has hired not only employees over 50, but also many Kingmanites.

very scared patient
you're right folks...HMMC will prosper because the doctors put their $$$ in this hosp. hence, they all want it to progress, meaning better care and service to the community for their revenue to go up.this hosp has to raise the bar. so kingmanites,go to HMMC. the staff there are competent and skillful professionals.they don't belong to a certain congregation like the people at KRMC.

Who Cares About KRMC anymore They want to own it all
I notice how they point out KRMC is non profit and kingmans public hospital owned by our community yet they go out of town for thier signs now when there are lot of sign companies in kingman qualified enough to do the job. Oh wait someone is pocketing money. Bet the miner doesn't post this one. Let see in our non-profit hospital if how do you say the Directors of each department save money IE cut down staff hours or short staff they get a bonus. This goes from the bottom director to the top, so the profit goes into thier hands. Now they bought Fastrax urgent care guess what I know a few people who worked for the hosptial and got fired from there and now they will get fired again because you can't work for the hospital again for so many years. At least the profit hospital has to do good other wise they lose money well profit mean greed which means they want more so probably better care. Hell I have been in the ER at KRMC a few times in the past month and don't recognize the staff I.E. some of them are now at the new hospital. The care was worse than a year ago since I have gone there. There's rumors that have been going around saying that the new hospital was only accepting Blue Cross Blue Shiled clients and after 2 months they were going to close and sell for a loss for tax reasons. I would like to see this posted.

Yes, HMMC does have a very nice, comfortable non-denominational chapel that is open to everyone; All are welcome, believers and nonbelievers; God loves all his children.

tired of the negativity in Kingman
Good grief people, a "meditation garden" is just a nice quiet place where people can go to think and relax. Most of those who use the garden have probably been spending time with a loved one who's in the hospital and need a little time away from that stress. It has nothing to do with religion....and I would imaging the new hospital does have a non-demonationalchapel somewhere on campus as does KRMC.

Ed, stop checking in if you've checked out.
Price, meditation is older than the dead sea scrolls. And the "largely unsuspecting worlds psyche and vocabulary" would be more accurately described as the largely brainwashed and ignorant christian sect. I'm sure Christians could use the meditation garden to pray in, you know, like Christ did.
Daryl, this is the land of religious freedom.

"What we do need is more entertainment, shopping, and restaurants to boost the economy a little bit."
It may be a waste of time, this may be tough for you, but try to grasp it anyway. In order to have the businesses that depend on disposable income you must first have the real jobs that provide people with the disposable income.

If you will look at past issues of the Daily Miner on the web, you will notice that KRMC's ad is always in the same place, on the front page cutting other ads in two.
I have lived in Kingman for more than 10 years and feel there is a great need for competition,as the monopoly KRMC has had until October 15, 2009, allowed them, as the only show in town, to treat the people that keep them open and pay their paychecks with disdain, scorn and disregard for their fellow man/woman.
Also, I am thankful for HMMC as their opening has provided jobs to many of Kingman's people in our failing economy, saving some members of our community from losing their homes, as now they have a job,and that HMMC will bring hundreds of thousands of dollars into OUR TOWN to keep the stores we do have open and will also pay a significant amount in taxes which may keep those of us struggling with the current increase in our taxes from having to pay out even more.
I personally am thrilled at the opportunity HMMC has given me to make a decision as to where I want to go for my medical care - HMMC I will be giving you my business when the time comes that I need medical care.
