It's that time of year again. Stores are full of holiday shoppers. But the holiday shopping experience can quickly turn into a nightmare. Thieves and con artists are on the prowl and theft often occurs in crowded locations, such as shopping centers.
Here are some tips to ensure a safe holiday shopping season:
Guard your Money: Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and only bring what you plan to spend. Don't put all your credit cards in one wallet.
Women should carry a small purse that closes securely. Don't set your bag down inside a shopping cart; carry it under your arm. Men should remember to keep wallets close to their body, preferably under a jacket or sweater to prevent pick-pocketing. Keep cash in your front pocket.
Guard your Purchases: Keep a close eye on your shopping bags and don't leave them unattended. To avoid a vehicle burglary, put packages inside your trunk. Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle, especially in plain view. Roll up car windows and lock the vehicle securely. Plan your shopping trips. Instead of making one big trip, try several small ones. This will cut down on the amount of money and shopping bags you'll carry and it will be less stressful.
Guard Yourself: Shop during the day when you can. If you shop at night, go with a friend or family member and park in a well-lit area. Avoid walking alone in abandoned parking lots or halls. If you feel unsafe, find store security and ask for an escort. Dress casually and comfortably and avoid wearing expensive jewelry. Carry keys in your hand as you approach your vehicle. Use them as a weapon if attacked.
Women Making History nomination forms now available through Jan. 15
KINGMAN - Nomination forms for Women Making History awards are available at the Mohave County Library, Mohave Community College and the Mohave Museum of History and Arts.
Nomination deadline is Jan. 15, and the award winners will be honored at 2 p.m. March 7 at the museum. Nomination categories are the arts, business, education, homemaking, pioneering, professions, public service, religion and volunteer contributions.

AARP Tax Program now seeking
volunteers for next year's tax season
KINGMAN - Volunteer training for the AARP Tax Program begins Jan. 11.
Volunteers must have computer experience and tax experience is helpful. Volunteers must pass a written exam at the end of the course in order to assist the elderly and low-income earners with their returns.

Kingman Parks Department looking for a few happy Santas for calls
KINGMAN - The Kingman Recreation Department is looking for several happy and cheery St. Nicks to assist in their annual North Pole Calling program that runs Dec. 1-22.
Calls are made evenings and weekends to children ages 3-8 in Kingman.

Lombardo's plans to donate 20%
of Dec. 2 proceeds to HALT
KINGMAN - Lombardo's, located at the corner of Eastern and Southern avenues, is donating 20 percent of proceeds generated from 4 p.m. to closing time Dec. 2 to Help Animals Lives Today.
Diners need to write HALT and sign their name on the back of the receipt in order for the no-kill adoption center to receive the donation.

Kingman High Student Council seeks canned goods for drive
KINGMAN - The Kingman High School Student Council's annual Canned Food Drive is underway.
First Chiropractic, Cerbat Cliffs Animal Hospital, First American Title and the Kingman city offices are drop-off points for non-perishable foods.
Collections continue through Dec. 11.
Women's Auxiliary of the Knights
of Columbus Council to host bazaar
KINGMAN - The Women's Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus Council hosts a Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 12 in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2255 Butler Ave.

Living the Loss of Your Child sets candle lighting for Dec. 13
KINGMAN - Living the Loss of Your Child Support Group hosts its annual candle lighting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at Grace Lutheran Church, 2101 Harrison St.
The event is in conjunction with the Compassionate Friends WorldWide candle lighting.

Filipino-American Club plans its Christmas Party and Program
KINGMAN - The Filipino-American Club Christmas Party and Program is from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 in the Kathryn Heidenreich Adult Center, 1776 Airway Ave.
