Man with local ties feared dead in crash

Suzanne Adams
Miner Staff Reporter

KINGMAN - A man with ties to Kingman is feared dead in a cargo plane crash Saturday morning in Shanghai, China.

Shaun Sheble, the brother of Joe Sheble Jr. of Sheble Aviation in Kingman and Mohave Valley, may have been one of seven crewmembers on an Avient Air MD-11F that crashed shortly after takeoff at Pudong Airport in Shanghai.

According to the Associated Press, three Americans were killed and four other crewmembers suffered serious injuries when the plane veered off the runway and burst into flames. The injured are being treated at a hospital in Shanghai.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the cause of the crash is under investigation by China's General Administration of Civil Aviation. A team from the NTSB was dispatched to help in the investigation.

According to United Press International, the data recorder for the plane has been located, but it may not reveal the cause of the accident.

My whole family and I are saddened by the loss of a friend and fellow aviator. We will continue to pray for the entire Sheble family and ask that they be comforted during this tragic time. God bless you Shaun may you rest in peace!

As a member of the international aviation community, I was almost instantly made aware of the accident in Shanghai. It was only just today that I found out that my friend, Shaun Sheble, was among the men lost in the tragic accident. I first met Shaun when I was training for my private pilots liscence at his family's flight school in Kingman. I was staying right next door. Shaun, in his typical boistrous manner, walked right up to me, brazenly and confidently introducing himself. In the moments to follow, I quickly realized that I had been placed in temporary quarters next to a lunatic. As the next two weeks commenced, he was there to welcome me back from my days training with a well deserved cold beer and as many stories and bits of advice as a dare take in. Having been a Flight Engineer on DC 8 freighters for some time myself, we had many questions for on another, and we instantly became great friends. As the years since have ticked away, we never lost touch of one another. I even had the great experience of working with him briefly in training at World Airways, where he was employed for a short time after Gemini Air Cargo, and before accepting his position at Avient. He was a wonderful guy to know. Fun, generous and caring with a huge heart and a laugh that could carry for miles, he certainly leaves the world a better place having been here. It is people like Shaun that make me proud to be in aviation. The community will never be quite the same without him. My deepest condolences and sympathy go out to his family, everybody at Sheble Aviation, the community of Kingman, and the countless people in aviation who had their lives brightened by getting to meet and work with this truly unique individual. You will be missed, my brother!

Sincerely,

Brent Foster

World Airways DC 10 Flight Engineer

December 3, 2009 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Prater, expressed his deepest personal condolences and those of the Association’s 53,000 members to the families and friends of the flight crew members killed and injured in the November 28 crash of an MD-11F freighter in China. All four were former ALPA members who flew for Gemini Air Cargo until that cargo airline ceased operations on Aug. 12, 2008.

Killed were Robert Maynard, Saul Raphael Perez, and Shaun Sheble; William Johnson survived and is reported to be in serious but stable condition

Thoughts are with all the families now.

Thank you Miss Adams for your report. While I am 3000 miles away from Kingman; I can resonate the remarks of Michelle & Matt. Shaun & I were roomates in Phoenix/Chandler, AZ along with Mark & Mike. Shaun I already mis your 3am phone calls (because you were always in another Time Zone while flying). You taught my wife to speak Contemporary English with 2 simple phrases: "Aaaarrgghh says the Pirate" & a Star Trek reference "Dammit Jim I'm a Doctor not a Magician". But most of all I will miss your kindness & hearty LAUGH! Thank you Shaun for being my friend! You are already missed!

I am so saddened by this devastating news. Shaun it seems like yesterday we were talking on Face Book about the famous Judge Joe Brown Video. We just want to say thanks for being such a great and fun neighbor. You gave us some great laughs and smiles at all of our bbq's and that time we went out to Chili's and The Sportsman. So wish we could go back to those times. We are going to miss you so very much. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
