WASHINGTON
The IRS is reminding new car buyers there is a tax break that may not be around in 2010. Taxpayers who bought a new vehicle after Feb. 16 can deduct state or local sales tax on the first $49,500 of the purchase price. Qualifying vehicles include passenger cars, light trucks, motorcycles and motor homes.
In order to claim the deduction, a taxpayer must file an itemized tax return and attach Schedule L to their tax return and check the box on line 40b on Form 1040 or 24 b on Form 1040A. Taxpayers who file jointly and make over $260,000 or taxpayers who file individual returns and make over $135,000 cannot claim the credit. For more information visit IRS.gov or your local tax preparer.
