County officials begin review of General Plan

Suzanne Adams
Miner Staff Reporter

KINGMAN - Mohave County is already starting to gear up for next year's review of the County General Plan. The County Procurement Department is looking for a company to organize, advertise, hold and collect, and summarize data from four General Plan review workshops next year.

The county is planning to hold the workshops at Mohave Community College in Kingman in February, the junior high school in Mohave Valley in March, the community center in Lake Havasu City in March and the elementary school in Beaver Dam in March or April.

Exact dates have not been set, but each hearing would be between three and four hours long and allow public comments.

According to Arizona Revised Statute, a county's general plan must be reviewed and readopted by the Board of Supervisors every 10 years. Mohave County's General Plan requires it be reviewed every five years and readopted every 10 years.

The last time the plan was readopted was in 2005. At that time, eight meetings were held in various locations across the county including: Kingman, Dolan Springs/Meadview, Golden Valley/ Yucca, Mohave Valley/ Bullhead City, Wikieup, Colorado City and Beaver Dam.

The original General Plan was adopted in 1965. The plan is designed to help manage growth in the county by designating certain areas for residential, commercial and recreational developments.

According to Arizona Revised Statutes, the plan can be amended once a year. This year, the Board approved two amendments to the plan for two large concentrated solar plants.

Companies interested in the project have until Jan. 21 to submit their bids to the county.

A pre-proposal conference meeting will be held Jan. 14 in the Cholla Conference Room, 700 W. Beale St. For more information or to bid on the project, contact Annie Newton-Lawson at (928) 753-0752, ext. 2

For a copy of the current General Plan, visit www.co.mohave.az.us; click on the "Department" tab, then on the "Development Services" tab and then on the "Planning" tab along the right side of the screen.

Residents can also call the Mohave County Planning and Zoning Department for more information about the plan at (928) 757-0903.

Why don't you just run the whole general plan thing through the shredder and declare an "Anything Goes" holiday. That's what the county BOS and P&Z has been doing anyway. Every Bozo that comes along with a dream and a rainbow gets his way regardless of the general plan and is welcomed as if he was the Messiah. A little variance here, a little spot-zone there, that's how we do it in Mohave County . . . we all know that. A few signs at the county and state lines would let the rest in on the (no so) little secret.
