LAKE HAVASU CITY

The Bureau of Land Management will close public lands in the Parker area from 2 p.m. on Jan. 8 to 6 p.m. on Jan. 9 and from 2 p.m. Feb. 5 to noon Feb. 6 for the 39th Annual Parker 250 and 425 desert races.

The closures are to help ensure public safety and prevent unnecessary environmental degradation. Areas subject to this closure include all public land, including county-maintained roads and highways located on public lands that are within two miles of the designated course. Maps of the racecourse and closure areas are available at the BLM Lake Havasu Field Office, 2610 Sweetwater Ave. For more information, contact Michael Dodson at (928) 505-1200.

PHOENIX

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has already used 75 percent of $3.2 million in stimulus funds awarded to the department for the clean-up of underground storage tanks.

Eleven private firms will clean up 24 sites at old gas stations and other businesses in Prescott, Holbrook, Parker, Willcox, Dewey-Humbolt, Coolidge, Safford, Winslow, Globe, Williams, Wellton, Somerton, Clay Springs, Sonita, Truxton and Yuma.

The majority of the sites have no known or financially viable owner. The work includes removing old underground fuel tanks and cleaning up the soil and groundwater impacted by gasoline or diesel contamination.
