Board shakeup on MCC agenda
College looks to buy video equipment for campuses, 10 satellite classrooms

KINGMAN - The Mohave Community College governing board will address an unexpected shakeup in its membership when it meets this morning.

Board members are expected to accept the resignation of the college's District 4 trustee, John T. Neal, who submitted his resignation the previous day. Neal, who had served on the board for more than five years, offered little explanation for his resignation in the letter he submitted to the board, except to say that "through life's twists and turns" he had come to realize he would be unable to dedicate his time to the college "over the next few years.'

Neal's district covers approximately one half of Kingman, while District 5, represented by Jerry Ambrose, covers the other half. But that could change today, since Ambrose, who recently moved to a house within Dist. 4, has also submitted his resignation and has expressed an interest in taking over Neal's vacant seat, leaving the county superintendent of schools, Mike File, to appoint a temporary replacement for District 5 trustee.

Anyone interested in serving is urged to contact File's office at (928) 753-0747. Because of the appointments, both seats will be contested in this fall's election.

The board will also consider approving the expenditure of $250,000 in college funds to match a $500,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to fund the purchase of new video equipment for each of the college's four main campuses, as well as for 10 new satellite classrooms to be set up throughout the county's rural areas.

According to MCC Director of Marketing and Communication Charlotte Keller, the classrooms would be established at three existing public schools in Golden Valley, Littlefield and Wikieup, as well as at fire stations in Golden Shores, Yucca and Oatman. Additional classrooms would be set up on the Ft. Mohave, Hualapai, Chemehuevi and Kaibab Paiute nations' reservations.

If the board approves the purchase, the 10 new classrooms could be ready by the fall. Keller noted that the classrooms could be used to teach both general education classes as well as more specialized courses, such as instruction in fire science at the three fire stations.

In addition to reaching potential students who might not otherwise be able to attend the college's main campuses in Kingman, Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City and Colorado City, Keller said the new equipment would also be offered to countywide businesses and organizations in order to host long-distance conferences.

Elsewhere on the agenda, the board is expected to approve a revised policy on the naming of college facilities, as well as a "Red Flag" policy designed to prevent identity theft. The board will also appoint its officers for 2010.

Today's meeting begins at 10 a.m. in room 502 at the Bullhead City campus, 3400 Highway 95. Local citizens can participate via teleconference in room 502 at the Neal Campus in Kingman, 1977 Jagerson Ave.

Re. @ Reggie

Sorry Reggie but the ball is in Mike Files court. Therefore Ambros is a shoe in!

Especially if he is the only one who puts in for the position!

Ambros and File belong to the Elite Good Ol' Boys, so best wish's hope you put a letter in to Mike File, for the position!

Valle Vista is in District 5. Feel free to submit your interest in being appointed.

Ambrose should not be allowed to swap seats. If he moved he should be off the board. He was elected in one district and now want to manueuver to serve the other district, because he moved. That is the consequence he knew about.
