KINGMAN - A 19-year-old who made headlines for impersonating a police officer was sentenced Monday to 150 days in jail for defrauding two local car dealerships.
Skyler Whalen will get credit for 48 days already served in custody. He said he's learned his lesson following a series of incidents that included impersonating a Marine and a police officer on separate occasions and essentially stealing two cars by providing the dealers with fake pay stubs and bad checks.
He said he's now got a steady maintenance job, volunteers with the American Legion, plays lead guitar in the church band and is less than 10 credits away from graduating from an online high school.
"I'm not as good as I'm going to get, but I'm definitely better than I used to be," Whalen told Mohave Superior Court Judge Steven Conn.
Conn had the option of imposing up to a year in jail after Whalen entered into a plea agreement with the state for a guaranteed three years on probation.
Prosecutor Ken Skousen recommended six months jail time, which he said was deserved given Whalen's accelerated rate of criminal acts.
Whalen was charged with impersonating a police officer after responding in uniform to the Fairgrounds in March but that charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.
Whalen was arrested by KPD officers in June after his forgery skills netted him a 2007 Nissan Titan from a local Dodge dealership, which he then traded in several days later toward the purchase of a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado from a local Chevrolet dealership.
One of the sales associates said it wasn't until after Whalen left the dealership that he remembered his name from a newspaper article detailing his previous arrest for impersonating an officer.
