24 holiday DUIs tripled the limit

Local authorities said they arrested two dozen people with an average blood alcohol level of almost three times over the legal limit during the holiday season.

Kingman Police Cpl. Dan Spivey said the Western Arizona DUI Taskforce arrested 24 drivers who had an average blood alcohol level of 0.219 percent during the DUI enforcement campaign that ran Nov. 24 through Jan. 1. That was more than the statewide average of .15 percent as reported by the Arizona Office of Highway Safety.

The Western Arizona DUI Taskforce includes the Kingman Police Department, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, and Arizona Department of Public Safety. Spivey said the agencies contacted a combined number of 528 motorists.

In addition to the 24 arrested for DUI, 265 drivers were issued other citations and 15 people were arrested on warrants or other violations, Spivey said. Nine minors were also arrested for consuming alcohol while underage.

"On a positive note, 55 designated sober drivers were contacted, who were transporting others after holiday celebrations." Spivey said.

He added that 17 regional DUI Taskforces across the state made 430 misdemeanor DUI arrests and an additional 450 felony aggravated DUI arrests.
