Codie Levi Mejia, the 27-year-old Kingman father accused of shaking his one-year-old son and causing severe injuries, was still in custody at the Mohave County Jail Friday.
Kingman Police Department
Sgt. Bob Fisk said the baby is now able to breath for himself but is still unable to eat. He is on a feeding tube, Fisk said.
Fisk said he could not confirm if the baby is now responsive.
Mejia was charged the week of Jan.14 with felony child abuse and domestic violence by aggravated assault for allegedly inflicting injuries on his son that are consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
According to police, Mejia told detectives he had been smoking Spice, a chemical compound designed to mimic the effects of marijuana, and fell asleep. When he woke up, he realized that his son had fallen off the bed, called 911 and tried to revive the baby by shaking him.
Fisk told the Miner that doctors diagnosed the baby with a broken vertebra, brain hemorrhaging and brain shearing. He went on to say that detectives do not believe Mejia's story.
