Women Making History: For Education, Carree Garfield and For Business, Dora Manley

Carree Garfield, Women Making History winner for Education.

Carree Garfield: Winner, Education

Garfield, an Arizona State University grad, has been an educator in Kingman schools for 33 years.

"She lays the strong foundation that each child needs for a good education and they remember this as they continue learning," wrote Sue Snell in her nomination letter. "Not only does she lay the foundation for their academic careers, but she also teaches them life skills that are very valuable for their futures.

"She teaches them the importance of respect, honesty, integrity, kindness, caring, sharing and helping others."

Nominated for a couple of educator awards in the past, Garfield, wrote Snell, "takes no credit" and prefers to stay in the background.

"Her rewards are seeing the results of her long, hard hours as she turns out successful students year after year," wrote Snell.

Dora Manley: Winner, Business

If supporting charities and other nonprofit organizations were an Olympic event, Manley would be a gold medalist.

Not satisfied with simply giving away money, the owner of Dora's Beale Street Deli has used her restaurant to help raise funds for a multitude of recipients, according to her husband Kurtis, who nominated her.

They include Kingman High's jazz band, the city's police and fire departments, the Cancer Walk, Toys for Tots, ROOT Teen Outlet and the Marine Corps Veterans Dinner.

She has donated lunches to folks who volunteer at charitable organizations and she has sponsored or donated to the arts, downtown businesses, music concerts and the MCC Wine Festival.

Truthfully, there is not enough space to list all of the worthwhile causes Manley champions.

Most recently, wrote Kurtis Manley, his wife donated 60 prom night dinners to students at Kingman High School. Both Manleys graduated from KHS.

"Dora Manley epitomized the term community service," said Kurtis Manley. "She maintains her philosophy and recognizes the importance of giving back to the community."
