KINGMAN - Kingman Academy of Learning has been named one of the top 50 schools in the state by SAT scores.
The Academy's high school was ranked No. 48 in the state by the Arizona Department of Education with an average total SAT score of 1589.
"We were very pleasantly surprised," said KAOL District Administrator Susan Chan. "Our culture is to provide our kids with the best education possible. We expect a lot out of our kids."
Kingman High School came in with an average total score of 1563, said KHS Guidance Counselor Ann Bathauer.
The highest score in the state, 2038, belongs to BASIS Scottsdale, a charter school.
The average score for the entire state was around 1541, and 1498 for the nation.
The test is made up of three parts - reading, writing and math. Each section is graded on a score from 200 to 800. The highest total score a student can achieve on the test is a 2400.
The average score for each school also depends on how many students take the test. According to the Phoenix Business Journal, 25 students took the test at BASIS Scottsdale.
Bathauer said 60 KHS students took the test last year. Chan said KAOL had 43 students take the test. According the College Board, which runs the test, 23,052 students took the SAT in Arizona and more than 1.6 million took it nationwide.
