KINGMAN - Traditional school wasn't cutting it for Allison Haller. The Kingman sophomore switched to Primavera Online High shortly after starting high school in a traditional school.
"I was distracted by all the students there," Haller said. "I prefer to get my work done on my own without worrying about other kids."
The choice to join the free, online-only school came after research completed with her parents.
"For me the experience has been really great," Haller said. "It's completely different from going to a normal school."
With a flexible class schedule, Haller is able to volunteer at an area elementary school.
"I always liked kids, so I really enjoy volunteering with the elementary classes," Haller said. "Primavera is the only school where I can get my schoolwork done and still be able to volunteer during the day."
By volunteering, Haller said she is able to overcome the difficulty of finding friends through the online school.
"Sometimes it's harder to find friends, but you still can find many friends on Primavera," she added.
Haller's favorite part of Primavera is how all the content is online and the coursework is flexible.
"I get to wake up in my jammies and go to work," Haller said.
As the school's first ambassador for Kingman, she has advice for those considering switching to Primavera.
"I think that they'd love it, in all honesty," Haller said. "I knew I was nervous at first and then I loved it."
Primavera customizes the educational goals for each student.
"One size may not fit all when it comes to education, and at Primavera the students' needs always come first," said Damian Creamer, founder of Primavera, in a news release.
Creamer created the online accredited high school eight years ago in Chandler.
"Primavera offers diverse and comprehensive curriculum in both core and elective subjects," Creamer said. "This is important for students who live in smaller communities and may not have access to specialized classes such as economics, world religions or psychology."
Primavera is available for free to any Arizona student ages 14 to 21. For more information, call (877) 877-4628 or go to www.primaveratech.org.

I go to primavera, and I am able to socialize so much more then when I went to regular highschool, and I get a second chance at being able to graduate. so if you think students are missing out on the social experience, you are very wrong.

My daughter is friends with Allison. They met in school a few years ago. My daughter Crystal is a student of Primavera for the past 2 years. She is also sophomore. I would have to disagree with NO NAME who said Our kids are missing out on so much by going this way (socializing, communication skills). My daughter is very well rounded, she attends church, and has friends in the neighborhood. She is online less than the average kid her age - and the hours she spends in front of the computer is actually work hours. There are no hallway times to waste and if socializing = cutting class with friends, smoking pot and finding out whos's "doing" who, I am perfectly fine with my child being unsocialized! My daughter is 16 1/2 and I have little to no complaints on her behavior, she does well in school and the teachers are always a phone call away.

Primavera Online High School is an excellent program. My daughter graduated last Spring from Primavera. They provide an excellent curriculum, flexible schedule, convenient state testing (usually held at MCC), and the teachers are wonderful! The staff at Primavera are always available by phone or email. They are prompt in responding to any inquiry.
My daughter had such a wonderful experience through this online school. It took her away from the extreme peer pressure, drugs, social distractions, etc.from the high school(s) here in our community. Primavera was a life saver for her and our entire family. I don't know what we would have done without them.
Not to mention the fact that the graduation ceremony was held in Phoenix at a nice college. It was a beautiful ceremony and all the students wore cap and gown. The school is accredited and college options after graduation are the same as going to a traditional school. If you choose this alternative way of education, you won't be missing out on anything! I highly recommend Primavera Online High School!! Good Luck Allison- you will love it!

I have to commend those students who are doing online school. I know as a college student I have done online classes as well as traditional classes and it takes a lot of self-discipline to be successful with online classes. So way to go to the students who can do it and not get lost in the system. And by doing online classes you don't lose out on lessons in socializing or dealing with people everyone learns that from parents and how they are treated by others.

How could our kids be missing out on anything by doing an online school. The ones that can't seem to function are the ones that are in a public school system. Look at all the fights at the high school, that teacher that got beat up last year, the hit list that was found the year before. My daughter does pinnacle online, and she does not have to deal with all the distractions, and all the violence. She gets a real education. She also is involved in girl scouts, 4-H, police explorers, and youth group with the church instead of running around with all the druggies, and want to be gangbangers. So how could she be missing out on anything? She doesn't have any problems functioning in a group setting, and she isnt out getting in trouble.

If the program works for her I think that is great and she should be commended for not dropping out of school and sticking with the it. Parents should be open to this idea because not all students do well in school. One of the big reasons for that is peer presure. This is a program to seriously consider if school is not working for your child.

School was never a place to send your child to learn how to socialize or learn communication skills for your children! They are to learn when they are at school (so the government tells you). Socializing and communication skills are to be taught and demonstrated by the parents and others around them.
We as parents are to teach our children how to function in the world.
Having friends is a perk, but not needed in order to survive.
Home schooling or in this case online schooling offers our children a chance to volunteer (like the girl in the article is doing) and become involved with the community more so then if they were in a regular school environment surrounded by other children who can't seem to put a simple phrase together, or keep their pants pulled up or hair out of their face. Don't believe me, then please let me challange you to spend just one day at the public high school. Or talk to the teacher who had to tell the student to put his pants back on (I understand the child was hot, but please! taking your pants off in public! This happened at your local high school) Once you do so, I am sure your ideas will be different.

I agree with No Name...I was pretty shy in high school, and I probably would've thought back then that an online school was a good option, but I had to tough it out just like everyone else. And guess what? I survived, I learned, and I grew.
Slowly but surely, our kids will be raised by machines and the government.

I think this is a great alternative for children to get their education if they do not want to attend a regular high school. There is nothing wrong with getting an education online. This young lady is still active in society by volunteering at a local elementary school. Public high schools today do not teach kids to function in a group setting. Alot of schools are filled with negative pressures. Drugs, violence, bullying, judging other kids by the lack of nice clothes ect...Sure, there are some positives at public high schools but if this young lady and others choose online school rather than deal with the pressures at a public school, they have that right. I back this young lady 100%. At least she is getting her education and is motivated to succeed and knows what will work for her. She is not missing out on any opportunities by choosing on online school. I truly do not want my son to attend junior high here in Kingman next year. I am thankful that today we have choices such as Primavera. It helps keep our children safe from influences we do not wish them to face. It is not for someone else to decide what is the right choice for another. We are all individuals with different needs and goals. It is not important where they get their education..it is only important that they do get one...

Our kids are missing out on so much by going this way (socializing, communication skills). Another example of how we are isolating ourselves as a society. No wonder our kids can't function in a group setting at work or in play.
