Guilty plea ends '20 years of hell' for Kingman family

Bernard Scott Stewart sat quietly in court Thursday as Mohave County Attorney Megan McCoy read four letters from his victims detailing some of the horrors he put them through. Then Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle sentenced him to 141½ years in prison.

Stewart was arrested in August 2011 and charged with 17 felony counts for the sexual and physical abuse of his wife and kids. He told authorities that God said he should take his daughter as a wife and his wife should take their son as a husband.

Stewart was found not competent to stand trial and was treated with medications for bi-polar and manic depression for almost a year before returning to court.

In November, ignoring his attorney's advice, he said God had told him he needed to walk this path and pleaded guilty to all 17 felony charges.

"To say I hate you is a waste of energy," his wife wrote in her letter to the court.

The letter described his violent moods and said he would torment the family pets before killing them. He starved his wife and the two children by only allowing them to eat birdfeed and rabbits and forced them to commit sexual acts on him and each other.

"You are horrid. You are a close cousin to Hitler," she wrote. "Life with you was a living hell."

His wife was able to escape with the children in March 2011 after Stewart went hunting. She used a $10 Walmart gift card to purchase a loaf of bread and cheese and bought a $7 phone card so she could call her parents.

"And then I drove I-40 for the last time. We cried and yelled for hours between bites," she wrote. They ran into "so many people who helped them in so many ways" in the drive East to her parents' house.

She also wrote about how she returned to their Kingman home to find all of their possessions burned and their pet donkey dead.

"This paper can't hold the 20 years of hell I spent with you," she wrote.

She also wrote about the thrill she gets now that her children call her "mom" after so many years of them being forced to call her by her given name. Both children are doing well in school, she said.

"We're getting stronger every day. We're free now to live, laugh and love," she said.

The two children also wrote letters to their father.

The daughter wrote about earning her GED, finding a full-time job and going to college.

"I look forward to a future without fear," she wrote. "And for all those people who helped my father, I forgive you."

"Living with him was like living on eggshells," the son wrote. "Life is completely different now."

He wrote about the good grades he was getting in school, the friends he had made with kids his own age and the sports teams that he played on.

"I no longer walk on eggshells. I hardly think of him at all and when I do, it's not as a father but as some person I lived with," he wrote.

McCoy also read a letter from the wife's parents describing how helpless and fearful they felt during the whole ordeal.

I find the story disturbing, almost as much as some of the sick comments being made what the wish happens to him, one has to wonder what makes anyone desire to find glee in human misery, pain as if that makes them some how better than this sick human being! I truly believe anyone who finds glee in human misery is as sick as this man is and likely will end in the same eternal destination once their days on earth are ended!

I agree with previous comments except the fact that something must have been obvious. We were friends and neighbors with the Stewarts for 8 years. They would do anything for you.
Even looking back I could not see a problem that we missed except Scott became more and more religious.A complete shock to us!!! PS we are still in contact with Sharae, the real story is worse than is printed and believe it or not the kids ARE doing well.

Satan, the Great Deceiver, is the god who "told" him to do these things to his family. When somebody claims "God" has told them to do something and that something is awful, you can rest assured that it's not the God of the Bible.

Many will claim to come in God's name, professing to do good in the name of the Lord, but their actions speak otherwise. God isn't the culprit, man and Satan are.
Matthew 7:22

I don't comprehend this whole event. How did this go on for twenty years. Where did these people live, work, go to school that this went on for so long and no one knew. Also her parents...didn't know what to do. Why didn't they go to authorities?

Shame on you the attorney who was representing him!! Did you think he should of got off or use the excuse that he was suffering from a mental condition. I don't believe all people are mental when they do things like this. There are people who are just down right mean and cruel. Justice was surely served in this case. I just hope that the family recovers from their ordeal and lives a happpy life.

If God is talking to you and you can hear it, you might want to have a translator like a minister help you with his message.

and now it's time for some counseling, unless everybody thinks things will be normal after mom and the kids spent years having sex with each other.
