KINGMAN - The Central Commercial Company Building was one of 10 winners to receive the 2008 Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor awards.

The Central Commercial Company Building in Kingman was the only recipient from Mohave County.

"The purpose of these awards is to promote public awareness of historic preservation in Arizona," said Greg Michael, president of the Arizona Preservation Foundation. "It is a pleasure to be able to recognize the contributions of those who work to promote historic preservation and who demonstrate excellence in design, execution and a devotion to community."

Each year, 10 awards are given to individuals, businesses, organizations and projects in recognition of their efforts. The other winners were the Brunenkant Bakery Building in Florence, the Curley School in Ajo, the Franklin Police and Fire High School in Phoenix, the James A. Walsh Federal Building in Tucson, the McCullough-Price House Restoration in Chandler, Arizona State University professor Noel Stowe, Glendale's Department of Planning, the Santa Cruz County Courthouse in Nogales and the Tohono O'odham Nation Cultural Affairs Office.

The Curley School was announced as the grand winner during the Sixth Annual Statewide Historic Preservation Partnership Conference.

A panel of judges representing the fields of archaeology, architecture, history and preservation, as well as a representative from the Governor's Office, selected the winners from nominations submitted from across the state.

The non-profit Arizona Preservation Foundation and the State Historic Preservation Office, in conjunction with the Governor's Office, present the annual awards.

Sarah-

I'd love to see those pictures! My husband was the general contractor on the exterior renovation. The museum had a few pictures I could send to you via email, too.

In 1915 while in transit from Michigan to California, my grnadfather worked for a brief period at the Central Commercial Company store before being hired by the railroad for heavy work and more money. My grandmother used to shop at Central Commercial and they gave her a small "photo book" of the store -- pictures of the inside, outside, and of the fleet of cars (model Ts or...??). My mother was born in Kingman in 1916 and about 1918 the family moved on to California. I would like to donate this "photo book" of 8 photos or so to the historical society, but don't know whom to contact. Could you please give me a lead?

Much thanks!!

That is awesome. My kids family owned and operated it for years. The Gates Family. How do I send this to them?
