The animal shelter in downtown Kingman, formerly run by Mohave County Animal Control, is now under the leadership of the Western Arizona Humane Society. The Humane Society has been renovating the facility, including some changes in the front office (pictured). Here, a family gets ready to adopt a puppy from the shelter. From left to right are Jessica (holding Elijah), Emma, Tyler and Dan Aston with their new puppy. Hours of operation are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., with kennels open to the public from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 753-2727 for more information.

We needed the Human Society here Years ago but Kingman's Officials didn't cared about it or how many Cats & Dogs had to be EUTHANIZED because of them !!! also were did all the Money go from the Adoptions&Licencings, since the Old Shelter couldn't have their own Account ??? !!! Ask the Kingman Officials & see if they'll tell you the Truth were that Money went ??? Pretty Sad how Kingman thinks about Saving Animals Lifes,if it wasn't for all of the Organizations that doing everything they can to Save as many as they can it would had even been worse !!!

Hooray, for The Humane Society! I'm so glad to see them coming to the rescue of the animals who've been lost and abandoned in Kingman. I have lived here for 4 yrs. now and have found homes for three abandoned puppies and one kitten. I made the mistake of taking a fourth puppy (that was dumped near my home)to the shelter downtown, only to learn after the fact that they euthenize after 3 days! What kind of program did they have to adopt these poor creatures?! I was sickened! I like the ideas that True Animal Lover posted, but whichever programs The Humane Soceity have in mind, I feel sure they will do the right things by these animals, starting with good old tender loving care. Thank you, Western Arizona Humane Soceity. Welcome to Kingman!

Unless they are radically different here, the Humane Society is not going to take a "no kill" approach to the local animal shelter. The cost of keeping animals who may or may not be adoptable is very high when you're talking about vet bills for animals that have been neglected and/or abused, feeding of those animals, utilities for the physical shelter and salaries of employees.

I am an animal lover, and I'd love to see all abandoned and mistreated animals get to homes where they'd be loved and cared for, but I am also a realist. It's darn expensive, and without funding, the euthanasia option remains viable and economically sound. Not compassionate, I know, but it is the reality of the situation.

Hopefully the new management won't take extended holidays or suddenly decide to take the day off because they want the day off, like they did on the 3rd of July!

An orgainized foster proram would be an excellent way to help our dogs & cats have a chance to find a permanent home. Also the county needs to step up and allow more facilities for rescue, daycare, overnight boarding and pet related businesses. The county wants more revenue, there it is. Golden Valley is a huge dumping ground for unwanted pets. Capitalizing on this will bring more revenue. Mohave County shoul be the animal rescue kingdom of Arizona.

Hopefully new management will take a no-kill approach, create a more effective marketing plan for spay, neuter and chipping as well as an improved adoption marketing plan (and also releasing more to outside pet agencies) to help more pets return to forever homes and boost the local economy through dog food, grooming, vet, training, etc. sales (and sales tax revenu!). I would like to see more off-site adoption plans (like Petco, downtown, and other mall lots?)since most people frequent shopping areas and this exposure would increase adoption numbers. Also, Mohave County could use an Animal Services Directory/phone book that lists all resources animal related, since this is a big animal town. Coupons and advertising could fund the project. Anyone up to the task? I could sure use this type of little phone book to search for food options, veterinarians, home-shot suppliers, general supplies, etc. Hopefully the new management can promote Mohave's animal compassion image as a primarily no-kill community someday.
