3/9/2010 6:05:00 AM Letter: Sheriff needs to set the example
I have a bumper sticker on the truck I drive that says, "Support Your Local Sheriff." When I put it on the bumper I meant it, as I know the responsibilities of the sheriff and his deputies are immense, and the sheriff needs support from law abiding citizens. All Mohave County residents should be sticking together in these perilous times. The sheriff has an opportunity to set an example. What will his example be?
Now, due to the recent events with the violations of freedom of speech, I feel like ripping it off my bumper as I do not see the sheriff supporting "We The People." Is this what we want for Mohave County and America? I don't think so.
Where does our Sheriff stand on this matter? We have a right to know.
I have known Luca for some time now and I consider him a very good man and we have become good friends. I was at the McCain town hall meeting with my hand up for 30 minutes and never was given the chance to speak or ask a question. I have now been following the saga that has ensued and shall continue to do so.
It has become crystal clear that the Board of Supervisors violated ARS 11-410 by using county resources and county employees to influence political campaigns. This has been confirmed by many elected public officials and this is very disturbing in itself.
Furthermore, the situation was exacerbated by denying resident Zanna and many others their First Amendment right by prohibiting them from passing out McCain's voting record.
If laws have been broken here, and it sure appears that they have, where does our sheriff stand in all of this?
It is my understanding that the sheriff is to uphold all laws in the county, not just some, and all violators should be treated equally. It is referred to as equal protection under the law.

A few months ago, a friend back east said they saw on FOXNEWS. They showed me photograph Anthony Miller after he photographed me. She said they Campaign for McCain, perhaps Miller, to many of us as anti-government activists. I was standing next to Luca. They filmed us and used the clip to try and make us look bad. I asked FOX for the clip, no response.

Hey if you want to see the county at its best go by and look at what they did to a friend of mine. He built his home 4 years ago from the ground up himself and they checked the area before they bought the land since their was a open lot next to it and found the owner and even called him to find out what he was planning for the land.
The owner lost that land to the county for back taxes and they put a zoning notice up 1 year after he had built his home. they were told at the zoning meeting that the county wanted to change the zoning from residential to commercial so they could build a new complex for planning and zoning and flood control I was at that meeting with him the city zoning board told all in attendance that they couldn't stop what ever the county wanted to do the meeting was a courtesy and nothing more
The county told all of us at the meeting that they were going to build a 1 story building at the east end of the property so it wouldn't be right on top of any neighbors and access would be from the rear off of sunshine ave instead of Kino ave to keep from increasing traffic in a residential neighborhood
Well they lied! drive by and look at what they did its a crime they built a huge 2 story building at the rear of my friends property looking right into his 1/2 acre back yard he has no privacy at all now he has a therapy area set up for his disabled nephew and its unusable as the county people look right at them in the hot tub and sauna.
He has filed complaint after complaint and nothing has been done I went with him to take the story to the Miner and they were going to have a reporter come see well they never did and I will be surprised if they let this post go through.
He talked to super Gary Watson last week and Mr. Watson told him to sue the county in his opinion they would have a expensive parking lot. the funny thing is he has tried to find a attorney to just that for the last 1/12 years without any luck now he found out that their is a state law that protects the counties from action if you do not file a notice of intent to sue in the first 6 months after start of construction.
You really need to drive by this and see it for yourself if I hadn't I wouldn't believe it the 3900 block of Kino ave east of bank street
Great county we live in where our reps can come in and destroy our property values without even blinking a eye!

@ P-Rod
Just to let you know there was a Deputy named Paul Rodriguez who passed away in a vehicle accident on I-40 near Yucca a couple years ago, and he used the nickname P-Rod by many friends and relatives. He was young and his life was cut short abruptly out of nowhere.
He was a real person and he was known by the name you use as well. It is not any type of conspiracy or anything like that.
Even though everyone knows my views, I just thought I respond to your question. Hope it clarifies any misunderstanding.

First of all I want these allegations to stop. I have NEVER worked for the Sheriff's office and never will. I am an independent business owner but have watched the Mohave County taxpayers' constitutional rights being trampled on by the "good ol' boy" politicians that run this county, including the Sheriff. Second, if anyone is disrespecting the Sheriff it is obviously the "lackies" working for the Sheriff who are sitting on their [rear ends] reading this lousy newspaper and responding to this opinion letter when you should be working. YOU are disrespecting the Sheriff and the taxpayers in whatever County office you are employed by. Why does the Sheriff need his henchmen to respond for him? Doesn't he have a mouth? Doesn't he have any brains independent of his lawyer and media person? Maybe I should stand corrected. Maybe the Sheriff is out working taking up the slack of his cronies while they are sitting at their desks reading on line newspapers and doing nothing. Maybe the taxpayers should take a hard look at what's happening here. I have also never seen anyone's response to my question as to who this so called deceased cop (i.e. P-Rod) is. Why not? Is the Sheriff's office hiding something?

Wow Mr. Roberts! While I was conducting a little research on the Arizona Rangers over the weekend, Bobbi Cook made quite a statement! From what I found out, she’s right. Apparently you possess little knowledge on the Arizona Rangers. The Rangers are some of the most highly trained and dedicated volunteers in this state. Their value is more than legitimate in terms of savings to the tax payer, which is of great concern to the average person living in our cash strapped communities all over our state. I think you simply find Mike Hays a threat to your beloved Sheriff. He is a Ranger as stated on his web page and you made a poor attempt to use that as an attack on his person. Stupid mistake if you ask me. If Hayes plans on using the Rangers in Mohave County, he has my vote. That looks like a serious plan to reduce the costs to the Sheriff’s Office. I hope he can do it! Thank you, all of you Rangers, for everything you do!

Mr. Roberts you can take your badge sniffers comment and shove it where the sun doesn't shine pal. To enlighten you just a little yes you are right the Rangers do not have any powers alone as they are not viewed as a agency just like our own probation depts. here in Arizona weren't until 4 years ago but you see in other areas they work for the Sheriff or City depending where they are and yes they can according to the M O U that is in place, arrest you do investigations traffic stops no different from you. You should probley also know that a very big majority of the Arizona Rangers are ex law enforcement from all over hell they even have a few retired police chiefs and even a former State Secretary Lloyd Glassbrook. So since you view them as a joke all I can say is I hope they never have to provide you any kind of assistance for I fear that might hurt your feelings. Most of them do not want to be employed as they have made their livings and are serving our State and local community at a point of their lives when they could sit at home and do nothing you see they do not get paid nor do they get any assistance with duty gear body armor or anything so to hear your little speech it seams like your threatened well dont be The Arizona Rangers are here to provide support to you in your paid positions, and they are not badge sniffers as a matter of fact they are appointed and they have our own badge and state issued ID. And if you want to get right down to it a great many of them are very well trained as a matter of fact the AZPOST just adopted the Arizona Rangers training criteria for patrol carbine so laugh all you want I bet they are glad to be of service to you and make you laugh. You have a good and safe day sir. and BTW I do take offence of your comments and now I know what the Mohave county Sheriffs office and others here think of the Arizona Rangers and it really makes my mad to see what our county people think of the Rangers, as my son serves as a Ranger and I know this for a fact he fought for this country from 1989 to 1994 in the air force as a PJ he worked in Phoenix Az until three years ago as a Phoenix PD Sgt and left after his wife died of cancer so when you make fun of the Rangers all I can say is you can kiss my """" and I don’t care if you are a big bad deputy here my son would eat you alive any day of the week. While we are on the subject can anyone tell me why the Sheriff need a private Attorney on staff and why the Sheriffs office pays for that attorney out of their budget instead of from the County Attorneys office since she came from the county attorneys office and they represent the county including the Sheriffs office so isn't that like double dipping ?? Or why the county attorney Matt Smith hired Mr. Bill Ekstrom back as lead counsel ? do you realize he just retired and now he is starting a new retirement all over again so he is collecting retirement and is now starting on a new one wow I wish I could get my retirement and get rehired to start it all over

It is amazing how if someone brings up the Sheriff of Mohave County the amount of reaction it gets both negative and positive (amazing). Sheahan is good at politics, and his regime behind him (yes you McCabe) is the real problem with our county. It has become hard to find a deputy who actually will do more than show up and take a report. I have heard, and seen too many times how inept our county deputies have become. There are still some verty good deputies, and I applaud them for all they do. I will not trash talk anyone else on this web-site, and hate to see others do it. If you don't agree with someone then state your opinion, don't badmouth them. If they don't feel like showing their name, well that is their choice. It doesn't reflect on their opinion either way. Do I feel the Sheriff's Office is due for a change, yes. Do I feel Hayes is teh one for the job, I don't know....but I will meet him to find out. There is always someone out there better.

@ Proud Retired US Marine First of all, thank you for your service! God Bless men and women, who like you have given us so much! With all due respect to Mr. Hays, you should consider running for public office yourself. I would most certainly consider your accomplishments thoughtfully before I cast my final vote. I wonder if Sheriff Sheahan ever served in any branch of the Armed Services? He should have been old enough to go to Vietnam, as did many of my family members.

@proud U.S. Marine....my father fought with Patton in World War II, later excelled in engineering and designed equipment for NASA in-between overseeing construction of refineries and other facilities from Alaska to Saudi Arabia, and passed away at our house in Las Vegas two years ago. I cared for him during the last 18 months of his life. A week after he passed away, the Las Vegas Metro police saw fit to break into our home there, from displeasure over what I had been writing in an alternative newspaper. One week earlier, I had met Mayor Oscar Goodman to discuss my writings. A senior Metro official invited himself to join us at the coffee shop where we spoke. After they broke into my home February 12th, 2008 while I had been visiting the nearby Meadows Mall, I returned home to see their Metro police helicopter hovering over the house. This and other experiences give me a very low threshold for bearing Government's sense of entitlement anymore. I don't care what their claims to entitlement are. I currently face criminal charges here in Kingman for allegedly telephoning authorities forcefully after they broke nto my home here - this after I wrote controversial signed letters about Government to the Daily Miner. I hope you are trying to say that you strongly disapprove of this even if you disagree on some points with what a citizen victim has written.

I would like to submit my opinion to this debate on leadership and experience.
I was 16 years old when I sailed around the world as a merchant Marine to earn money for my starving family in Brooklyn, New York, where the Mafia ran all the streets safer and better than your administration does today.
I was in Parris Island boot camp when they bombed Pearl Harbor, was active in multiple campaigns from Guadalcanal in the South Pacific to Korea, and Vietnam. I saw thousands of my fellow Marines die for this great country. I was a survivor of many things, I came home to find out my family thought I was dead for being at war for so long. I was spit on at the Airport by hippies, my house was burglarized in Washington D.C. when the civil rights were underway, and I have seen, worked, and had the privileged to be friends with some of the greatest leaders of our country in the Pentagon.
I helped establish the Space Shuttle program for rocket boosters, underwater missile defenses for submarines, and in my latter years, I earned 3 college degrees in California, served on the CA Bar Association, and was proud to work with many Los Angeles Police Officers, Sheriff Deputies, the LA riots, and the list could go on forever.
I think I am qualified to say I have been surrounded by great men and leaders my whole life. I can tell you what is happening to our citizens in Mohave County is wrong and un-American. They are stepping on what I risked my life for in almost 50 years of service.
In my personal opinion, there are no leaders here - just a bunch of talkers who would run at the hint of any confrontation.
Say what you want about me - my resume would make you look like Camp Snoopy. The Sheriff and the Local Leaders are politicians, not real leaders with organizational skills. Besides I don't need them anyways, I can defend myself. I would like to take a look at the new candidate for Sheriff, at least he served his country and signed on the dotted line openly and freely during his life, and that counts for experience and leadership in my book.

Did any of you read the letter? Thanks to all who mentioned Hays, I had not heard of him before. Glad to see some one may stand up to the GOB club. Getting back to the article. Just what can the Sheriff do? Oh he can say I don't like what the BOS did so I won't enforce it? The two questions everyone should be asking is simple! Who wrote this policy/who directed it? Was it on the agenda properly? All this talk about the Sheriff and who should be is smoke screen over what has happened to our Constitutional Rights! Exactly what the BOS and the GOB want us to do is take our eyes off what they have done! Every Citizen should contact their BOS member and demand the Bord change its policy on freedom of speech at meetings! True freedom of speech is in "The Call To The Public" at every meeting! So what they limit the time, at least You can stand up at the platform and call them what they are! Open up the call to the public in all meetings. We should get on our State rep about changing the law on the Call to the Public. The law says May have a call to the public! It should say WILL HAVE A CALL TO THE PUBLIC!

Most of you have figured it out by now, but yes, the person using P-Rod is indeed a former employee. Not former by choice, but their actions. You didn't seem to have a problem with the Sheriff when you worked for him. If you do have a personal problem with him, there's no need to call out others who are simply doing their jobs (the legal counsel and media person). You were fired, get over it, move on.

Some guy wrote earlier- "Anyone who opposes Sheahan or disagrees for whatever reason is: insane...spent time behind bars...recently terminated...disgruntled...doesn't know the law...doesn't have a life worth living...uneducated...old news...ignorant...coward...and the list goes on." "Nobody in Mohave County could ever be a person worth anything according the Sheahan groupies. What does it matter if were exchanging credentials, he doesn't have any type of degree, so why doesn't he go out and drum up some papers to hang on the wall to really brag about? What happened to patriotism and or military service that the rest of us probably had to serve? That's not on his resume either as a adult of the 60's, so who is really what here if you want to ask real questions?" That guy was right when it comes to bringing new ideas to the front view of this community. As an open minded person, I welcome Mike Hays as a real person who may indeed have a better perspective on how to run a Sheriff's Office. I won't just sit here and read such obvious campaign seminar crap from someone who wants’ to ruin a good man's reputation for the sake of the status quote. That kind of action is a fine example of what is wrong with our entire country today. Roberts just doesn’t get it. He should become educated in the new wave of National Politics. The citizens just don't accept that kind of message. We are looking for solutions not just another politician. Hays is comming to town. I for one will be there to listen to his ideas and at least consider voting for a better choice in 2012.

When people post such negative stuff about people that they don't know like a new choice candidate, it becomes obvious that these types are simply connected to the opposition. I believe Mr. Roberts who post her often is, and by his own admission connected to the Sheahan Campain. That's ok. This is a free county and he can post what he wants. The important thing here is he is not representing those of us who read and post here. We are the working class who want something better than we have been receiving. A new candidate for Sheriff is a breath of fresh air here in Mohave County. I am certain Roberts will make some reference to this posting when he does that will simply qualify my opinion that he is part of the Sheahan machine.

Very good Oscar!
I am glad you sit at work all day getting paid to voice your political views, must be nice. However, the statute is not being twisted, it is exactly what was stated before by someone else as presented by you, "...the request of, and under the direction, control and supervision of, established law enforcement officials or officers." Do you think saving money would be in this administration's future? Nah...
As case in point - The Sheriff would never use any auxiliary unit or services authorized by Arizona constitution, because he knows everything and needs nobody help, no matter what. Just another know it all politician running up the bills for everyone else so he can keep everybody else away and not be exposed to the rest of the state, including Rangers or other official capacities that might figure out why he is so understaffed and over budgeted with all the crime and problems Mohave County is plagued with. Got to stick to the self glorifying agenda to keep statistics high to keep asking for more money with less Deputies...a simple calculator would fix most of the mess around here I think.
Since your so good in quoting the law and laughing everything off no matter who or what the topic is, why don't you look up the words "Cruel Irony."
Because after the Sheriff is done building his dream house mansion in Show Low (oops...that is already underway), he might run into a bunch of Rangers up there in the high country territory and will have to count on them for service as he retires. Now that's funny! or Cruel Irony from the view on how you feel about them.
Oh, I'm sorry, everyone thinks he is gonna stay here for life, no matter what he says come election time. You better check things out before you start mixing up facts and things your not up to speed with.

FYI
read below.
41-4201. Arizona rangers
The Arizona rangers are an unpaid, noncommissioned civilian auxiliary that is available for the purpose of assisting and supporting law enforcement in this state. The Arizona rangers do not possess any law enforcement or investigative powers that are not provided or established in law for all citizens of this state. Law enforcement support and assistance services are provided on the request of, and under the direction, control and supervision of, established law enforcement officials or officers. .......
try to twist these words around to make it sound relevant.

Whoever said that a business degree makes you be eligible to be Sheriff is funny also. I have a business degree from ASU but yet I'm not throwing my hat into the Sheriffs race. I have also volunteered with the MCSO for about 12 years. Whelp I guess I'm about as qualified as Hays. Maybe I'll make a website also!!!!!!
This is all very comical thanks for giving me something to laugh about durng my work day.

I guess there are a lot of people posting here that are either in the bag for the current Sheriff and refuse to allow another choice for a good man or they simply don't do their home work and vote. The later quite scarry. Voters who don’t take the time to investigate the candidate make dangerous choices. That's how a lot of poor leaders are voted in the first place. I took a look at www.hays4sheriff.com web site and read it for myself. He states on this bio that he attended Biola University and Majored in Business Organization and Leadership. I hate to break it to the folks who don't know anything about education but, Biola University is a pretty solid Institution. Nobody can say Hays does not have the education or experience. I also would be interested in knowing what college Sheriff Sheahan attended. The FBI Academy is not a university.

with all the references to lawsuits, allegations of various abuses, and corruption I think it is high time for the Miner to gather specifics and print them as a listing of atrocities (allegedly) committed under colour of authority here. Let the reader then decide the truth, factoring in - of course - the likely unwilingness of sheriff Sheahan to respond to any of it.
